I’m thrilled to announce that production has begun on the latest film–Luthier (working title).

Cinematographer Andy Bowley and I went to San Diego (in a part of town known as Birdland, because all the streets are named after birds or bird-related things) and spent three days shooting the subject of the film, luthier Robert Vincent.

Luthier Robert Vincent in his shop sits in front of the cameras for an interview.

One entire day was spent on the sit down interview, which I believe went very well. Robert is a smart, articulate man who knows how to maintain his focus when answering a question. This is a godsend. Because editing an interview with a subject who loves a tangent or ten is super frustrating.

We also spent time at Tropical Exotic Hardwoods in Carlsbad CA, where Robert sources some of his wood.

And on our first day in San Diego, we shot Robert and classical guitarist Gen Young. Gen tests each of Robert’s guitars before it makes its way to the person who commissioned it or a dealer.

We hope to resume shooting in May, when Robert will be constructing a guitar.
