David Licata is a filmmaker and writer of fiction and nonfiction.

He directed and edited the award-winning feature documentary, A LIFE’S WORK, distributed by First Run Features. ALW had a limited theatrical release and played at numerous festivals pre-Covid and during Covid, winning the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the San Francisco Independent Film Festival, and Best Documentary Feature, at the Eastern Oregon International Film Festival. It is now streaming on Amazon, Apple TV, Kanopy and others. ALW was awarded grants from the Yip Harburg Foundation and the Puffin Foundation.

He directed TANGO OCTOGENARIO, a short hybrid fiction-documentary film. TANGO screened at dozens of film festivals including New Directors/New Films (curated by MoMA and the Film Society of Lincoln Center) the Tribeca Film Festival, Rochester International Film Festival (Best of the Fest), and worldwide, from Krakow to Yokohama. It was broadcast on Public Television and made possible largely through an Individual Artist Grant from the New York State Council of the Arts.

He is currently directing a short documentary, LUTHIER (working title), which has been awarded grants from the New York State Council on the Arts and the Puffin Foundation. His fiction has been published in print in The Literary Review, Pilgrimage, anthologized in The Best of the Boston Literary Magazine. You can also find his work on many literary websites. His nonfiction has been anthologized in print in Two-Countries: U.S. Daughters and Sons of Immigrant Parents, and can be found on many  literary sites as well. He has written essays about film for Filmmaker Magazine, Film at Lincoln Center Daily, Submittable, and Talkhouse.

He was awarded fellowships at MacDowell, Blue Mountain Center, UCROSS, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Playa, Jentel and Fundacion Valparaiso (Spain).
